The Pros
1. Lifespan: 50+ Years
This is the big one. An asphalt shingle roof lasts 20–25 years in our coastal climate. A quality metal roof lasts 50–70 years — potentially the last roof you'll ever buy. Stone-coated steel and standing seam both routinely hit the half-century mark.
2. Salt Air Resistance
Huntington Beach's ocean air eats standard roofing. Metal roofing (especially aluminum and properly coated steel) shrugs off salt corrosion that destroys lesser materials. This is a genuine local advantage.
3. Energy Savings Up to 25%
Cool-roof rated metal reflects solar heat instead of absorbing it. In an Orange County summer, that means noticeably lower AC bills — many homeowners report 20–25% cooling cost reductions.
4. Class A Fire Rating
With wildfire risk a permanent California reality, metal's Class A fire rating (the highest) is serious peace of mind — and can help with insurance.
5. Wind Resistance
Properly installed standing seam handles 140+ mph winds. Santa Ana winds? Not a problem.
6. Lightweight
Metal is 50–150 lbs per square vs. 750–900 for tile. Less structural stress, and it can often go over one existing shingle layer.
The Cons
1. Upfront Cost: 2–3x Asphalt
Let's be direct: a metal roof costs $12,000–$25,000+ for a typical OC home vs. $8,000–$15,000 for architectural shingles. You're paying for 2–3x the lifespan, but the sticker shock is real.
2. Noise Myth (Mostly False, But...)
Properly installed metal over solid decking with underlayment is no noisier than shingles. But cheap installations (metal over open framing, no insulation) can be loud in rain. Installation quality is everything.
3. Denting
Hail large enough to dent metal is rare in coastal OC, but falling branches can ding softer panels. Stone-coated steel resists this best.
4. Color Fading
Cheaper painted finishes can chalk or fade in our intense UV after 15–20 years. Premium Kynar/PVDF finishes hold color far longer — always ask what coating you're getting.
5. Fewer Installers
Metal requires specialized skills. A shingle crew can't just "figure out" standing seam. Fewer qualified installers = get multiple quotes and check metal-specific references.
Metal Roofing Types Compared
We break down all three systems on our metal roofing page.
The Math: Is It Worth It?
A $20,000 metal roof lasting 50 years = $400/year. A $10,000 shingle roof lasting 22 years, replaced twice = $909/year (plus two rounds of installation hassle).
Over a 50-year horizon, metal usually wins — *if* you stay in the home long enough.
